Thoroughly Modern Millie, Newcastle Musical Theatre Company, at Newcastle Theatre Royal until Saturday.

THEIR smiles were contagious, every tap shoe was in time with the music and they looked like there was no other place they would rather be than on stage.

The members of Newcastle Musical Theatre Company delivered an up-beat, energy-fuelled production with every inch of their bodies working overtime to thrill the audience.

Leading the show, 16-year-old Eleanor Chaganis, who played Millie, delivered a show-stopping performance. Her voice was powerful and note perfect and not once did she fall out of the bubbly and loveable character she portrayed so well.

The costumes were authentic and effective, complemented stylishly by the scenery, which offered the perfect backdrop of 1920s New York. Although there were technical problems with the microphones, causing numerous lines to be lost, this did not faze the cast who remained in character and continued to give their all.

The choreography was effective, with a variety of solid solo dances and well synchronised chorus numbers. Although the American accent caused a problem for a few of the performers, occasionally resulting in muffled and unclear diction, the transformation from Geordie was generally spot-on.

The audience left grinning and humming the catchy melodies. This was an evening well spent which showcased a wealth of talent. The company directors should be proud.
