Loosely Acoustic: Mallon Brothers
Andrew Pain, Evening Gazette
TEESSIDE songwriting duo THE MALLON BROTHERS are headlining the Georgian Theatre’s Loosely Acoustic showcase in Stockton tonight.
Made up of Thornaby-born brothers Patrick and Thomas Mallon, the two write folk-rock tunes - many inspired by their Teesside surroundings or, as they put it, “pop with a Teesside twist”.
Their recordings (and often their live shows too) are brought to life with the help of an army of family and friends who are as talented as the brothers.
The band first came to the attention of Sounds in 2007 with their album Transported, of which I said at the time: “A Teesside group called the Mallon Brothers - surely a wind-up, I thought, given the local fame of a certain person.
“It kicks off all Johnny Cash-style before an almost Jools Holland-esque piano riff which drops in and out. Plenty of local references across the record to make your ears prick up, including the upbeat rock of Northern Town. The musical references criss-cross all over the place and each tune comes as a surprise.”
Support tonight comes from THE UNDERDOGS and NIGEL COOKE.
