Preview: Retro's 19th Birthday, Club Tall Trees, Yarm
by Andrew Pain, Evening Gazette
LEGENDARY club night Retro reaches another milestone in its amazing history tomorrow night when clubbers will celebrate the event’s 19th birthday at its spiritual home - the equally legendary Club Tall Trees.
The night promises to be an emotional one as it will be the last time the club night will have its birthday shindig at Tall Trees, where it has enjoyed an iconic 11-year history since arriving in Yarm in 1997.
Headlining tomorrow will be the Godfather of Retro, PAUL TAYLOR and few DJs anywhere in the world will have a record box equal to his.
For the best part of 25 years the DJ has been tucking away house, funk, soul and techno records, which has made his collection the envy of many a top name.
It was 1989 when he hit on the idea of replaying those old school club classics in a club night and calling it Retro. Slow to catch on at first, the night is now one of the country’s biggest club nights and almost always attracts thousands.
The compilation LPs have also sold well, proving the night works as well in the bedroom as on the dancefloor. Retro has been on tour around the country this week as part of its 19th birthday celebrations but Paul Taylor is still excited about playing back at the night’s spiritual home.
On his blog he says: “A true milestone was reached on Saturday with the first of our month-long birthday celebrations at the TUBE in Halifax where Ben Taylor and Tony Walker enjoyed playing to a packed house.
“A fantastic start to what will be a memorable and emotional month which includes our next Retro at Tall Trees tomorrow and it is, in fact, our penultimate gig at Tress.
“The countdown kicks off at 7pm with an official pre party in the Island bar. This promises to be a humungous night so try and get yourselves down early doors because we’re expecting a packer!”
He’ll be joined tomorrow by decks partner TONY WALKER, who began his career in Leeds at the likes of the Music Factory and the Gallery before going on to a career which included a spell at Galaxy FM and sets the world over.
RICKY ISTED, another Retro regular, will also be playing.
