MIDDLESBROUGH’S mima will be blowing out the candles on Wednesday as the town centre gallery turns three.
But is there one thing you’ve always wanted to ask about the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art? To celebrate its third birthday, gallery director Kate Brindley and her team are inviting visitors to find out the answers at a special event on Thursday.
Since launching in January 2007, mima has attracted more than 400,000 visitors.
National partnerships have been established with Tate and the Crafts Council, while international partnerships are in place with the Drawing Centre in New York and the National Museums of Berlin.
The gallery has also brought work by some of the biggest names in the art world right to Teesside’s doorstep.
Have you ever wondered how collections are developed and maintained?
Do you want to know what’s planned for mima’s future?
Have you ever wondered why the gallery promotes modern and contemporary art and craft? Well, now is the time to ask.
Kate says: “It’s a real joy to work in such an ambitious gallery situated in a town with the same drive and tenacity.
“On mima’s third birthday I’d like to personally invite our visitors to come and ask their burning question.”
This free event will take place at mima on Thursday from 6.30pm.
Since first opening its doors in 2007 mima has showcased work by artists from around the globe - with Ellsworth Kelly: drawings 1954-1962 currently showing until Sunday, February 21.
In November 2008 it launched mima friends - a registered charity that supports the development and promotion of mima - and membership has already topped 150.
The gallery also works with local schools, with its education staff delivering talks and tour sessions to groups as well as offering teacher training days and working on bespoke projects.
If you can’t make it to Thursday’s event, you can send your question by post to: Question for mima, mima, Centre Square, Middlesbrough, TS1 2AZ
